Hey, we’re so excited! Monorace is coming out on Thursday worldwide for 1.99$. We hope you’re going to love it, like we do. Link to Appstore.

Last week we decided to delay Monorace to add a cool endless mode. We did this because of the feedback we’re getting. Some told us it could be a great update. Yes, but we don’t do it that way. We try to ship product that is 100% ready.

Good we listened, the endless is great! It’s so much fun. And it’s almost done. The career mode (where you play through levels) is indeed great, but it’s just too quick. The level is over after 20 or so seconds. But in endless, it’s really up to you how far you can drive.

Now we’re working on challenges for endless. We’re sure it’ll be one shot challenge and you must decide before you start your endless if you want to challenge someone. That’s the opposite to challenge in career mode, where you can challenge someone after you finish. But what we’re not sure is if a challenge receiver will ride through the same endless as challenger (ie. the same random parts). That’ll make sence if we decide to add ghost. We tried that and it’s kinda confusing to see two monobikes on the screen…

Maybe you can leave a comment what you think about it.

Developing Monorace

Monorace, our 4th game for iPhone is being finished and will be soon available in your Appstore. It started sometime in April as a prototype. We wanted to do a fast-paced 2D racing game. I used physics engine called Box2D and had the prototype up and running in few days. Check the red-black image. The circle there is the Monobike.

Once we had good gameplay foundation we started to work on graphics side. We wanted to do really quick game this time – we were thinking about 2 months – because all of our game took long time to develop (always from different reasons). So we went for minimalistic approach – all black textures with nice background. And we though it would work. It took us few weeks. Check the result (the background is awful):

We presented it then to Toucharcade forums and it even appeared on the front page. What a disaster! Almost nobody liked the black textures. We set the bar high with Blimp. Now everyone is expecting super polished graphics with superb sound effect!

Alright we said, we’ll add some fancy textures. Easier said that done. We struggled for month to make it working. The main problems I experienced were texture mapping onto various shapes and performance on 2nd gen iPhones. It was chubby. Using texture compression and some cool rendering tricks I got it working, but we’re already over our time budget (about 2 and half months altogether). Looks cool though now (thanks unhappy fans!) :

Since beginning we knew it will be tightly integrated with Openfeint. We wanted users to challenge friends and they re-challenge them and so on. We’re having so much fun doing that! Also after each race you see your friends times. So that was success!

Last phase was to add some deeper feel. We contacted our oversea friend, Mr. Egoraptor, great voice actor, to make some voices for our 3 characters. We love Big D. voice so here you have an example: Big D. Success as well.

Now, after 3 months later we sent out BETA versions and are finishing the game. As programmers say: “We have 90% done thanthe other 90%”. Finishing a game is always painful process with minimum sleep, lots of headaches and zillion bugs. But in the end we do what we love…

We’ve been working for some time on iPad version our first iPhone game Blimp. The game will be called Blimp HD, and it’s coming to iPad next month (August). The main amount of work is to redesign menus and guis for larger screen, while the levels stay the same (they are originally 1024×1024 so it’s great looking on iPad screen). Although we have to make some changes to in-game elements. Namely they’re enemy blimps (their movement look odd), radar, fires and some other minor changes.

But we are very happy with the look – it looks gorgeous! We’ll be releasing LITE version as well, so everybody can enjoy at least a bit from Blimp HD. The price is set to 4.99$. More info coming…
